Bipolar Disorder 2 Q & A

What is bipolar disorder?

Formerly known as manic depression, bipolar disorders are brain disorders that cause dramatic mood swings between disruptive states of depression and mania. While the changeability of your moods interferes with your life, your depressive and manic episodes also cause symptoms that disrupt your ability to function normally.

Bipolar symptoms are classified as depressive, manic, and hypomanic.

Depressive symptoms include:

  • Feelings of intense sadness, worthlessness, and hopelessness
  • Lost interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Fatigue
  • Poor concentration and indecisiveness
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Changes in appetite

Manic symptoms include:

  • Grandiosity and exaggerated self-esteem
  • High energy levels
  • Trying to do too many things at once
  • Distractibility
  • Increased risky or self-destructive behaviors
  • Racing, uncontrollable thoughts

Hypomanic symptoms are similar to manic symptoms, but are less extreme and usually last for four days or less. Hypomanic symptoms are typically less disruptive than full-blown mania.

What are the different types of bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder has three distinct classifications: bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorder.

Bipolar I

Bipolar I causes dramatic mood changes between depressive and manic episodes. You may also have periods of normal mood between your extremes. Your manic episodes may be so severe that you experience psychosis — a mental break from reality.

Bipolar II

Bipolar II also causes intense mood swings. However, you have hypomanic episodes instead of severe mania.

Cyclothymic disorder

Cyclothymic disorder is the least severe type of bipolar disorder. While your moods may be less extreme, you’ve lived through at least two years of changeable moods and your symptoms don’t meet the criteria for a bipolar diagnosis.
